Ringing table containing the inscription ‘J LIZARS, 16, GLASSFORD ST, GLASGOW’ and dated to the early 20th century. John Lizars (1810 – 1879) was an optical and mathematical instrument maker who started his first shop in Glasgow in 1830. The original business was at 12 Glassford Street in the Merchant City and later moved to larger premises at 14 and 16 Glassford Street, where all types of optical instruments were made and repaired. The company continued after John’s death and, by 1913, the company had branches in several other cities, including Edinburgh, Liverpool, and Belfast. The company merged with C. Jeffrey Black in 1999, forming the optometrists Black and Lizars.
