Microscope
53 (FW Sturt;
c. 1860) Not much information was found about this company, apart
they were 19th century opticians that traded from Tunbridge Wells,
near London. Microscope 53 was
probably made in England in the mid 19th century. Unusual in this
microscope is the substage system of lenses to condense the light in the
sample. Inside the drawer of the original wooden box containing the
microscope there is a very faint stamp where it is possible to identify ‘F
W Sturt, Tunbridge Wells’. It is unclear if this company was the maker or
simply a retailer for these microscopes. This type of microscope was
still sold during the first half of the 20th century, for example described
as beginner Society of Arts Model in the second-hand microscopes catalogue of
A. Clarkson & Co (Figure 1). Figure 1. Beginner Society of
Arts microscope model as engraved in the second-hand microscopes catalogue of
A. Clarkson & Co from the 1920s. LAST EDITED: 21.01.2021 |
